Ven. Piyadassi Thero

Ven. Piyadassi Thero

After the passing away of the founder monk (Ven. Panadure Ariyadhamma Thero) of Sri Sambodhi Viharaya in Sri Lanka, the Venerable Piyadassi Nayaka Thero (1914-98) renowned for his missionary work moved over to Sri Sambodhi Viharaya and was responsible for developing it as a place of worship with regular programmes for devotees to participate. He was assisted in this task by Venerable Kusaladhamma Thera. Venerable Piyadassi was accepted as one of the world's most eminent Buddhist monks, a forceful preacher and an indefatigable Dhamma- duta. He attended the Centre for the Study of World Religious at Harvard University, USA and in his long service to the Dhamma, he represented Sri Lanka at several international religious and cultural conferences. Having travelled widely carrying the message of the Buddha-dhamma, both to the East and the West, he was able to write in a style that had universal appeal. Among his publications, the best known was 'The Spectrum of Buddhism' a very readable book yet one that is penetrating because of its depth.
