Relevance
The turbulence and suffering in the present era, be it the turmoil of daily life with its increasing material activity and mental discontent, or the ills of the world are mainly man’s own making. His incessant lust for power, desire to dominate and impose his own views and beliefs on others, no matter how fallacious these may be, and the will to succeed at any cost are the main reasons for such suffering. As a radical cure for such afflictions and problems of the world there exists an eternal wisdom, unfailing guidance, the Dhamma, the teaching of the Lord Buddha with its message and power of healing.
It is worth noting that the Bible commences with the words “in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” while the Dhammapada opens with the words “Mind precedes things, dominates them, creates them. Through mind alone we contact the outside world. It is the source of all the good and evil that arises within and befalls us from outside. This is expressed in many instances by the Lord Buddha and the following words are taken from Anguttra Nikaya:
“Whatsoever there is of evil, connected with evil, belonging to evil are all issues from the mind. Whatsoever there is of good, connected with good, belonging to good are all issues from the mind “.Thus it is our own mind that should be established in all the roots of Good to overcome such suffering. Only through a change within our self will there be a change outside.
Buddhist Meditation teaching and practices encourages one to study his own mind, to understand its powers, functions and habits and then to shape and cultivate it. This will lead to understanding of the reality of true nature of things,
Buddhist Meditation has many benefits. It improves one’s focus, develops inner peace and serenity enabling one to face everyday challenges without fear and anxiety and to lead life with loving kindness, compassion and happiness. The ultimate aim of Buddhist Meditation is to free ourselves from roots of Evil pointed out by the Lord Buddha : Greed, Hatred and Delusion.
